Go MTH!

The past 6 weeks it has been the Canned Food Drive at Mt. Hebron! This is one of my favorite times of year simply for the charity of it (and the competition)! My class has been on the top 3 leader board for the last few years, and I was not about to let that change this year. The competition is by 6th period classes and the total number of cans is divided by the number of students for the competition. The past few years I have had 20 students or less in my last period, but this year I have 32! We have had to work almost twice as hard to raise money and cans. I am so proud of the school in general, but I am extremely proud of my class. We came in 3rd place (I don't count the winner listed on the poster in the front of the school because he doesn't technically have a class)...my closest friend at school won 1st place! Go MTH World Language department!!!

The Canned Food Drive has been going on for decades, and it has not gotten much attention in the press since I have worked there. Today, however, a reporter came to the school to do some interviews. Check out the article here. There was one huge error in the article though. It said that we collect about 15,000 cans, but in reality it's 50,000 (I think 47,500 this year). We help 150 families with boxes of cans, Christmas dinner, gifts for the children, and household products. Each family receives 5 or 6 boxes of items.

My National Honor Society kids fundraised over $2,500 in order to go shopping for the children of the families. We spent this past Monday and Tuesday after school wrapping over 300 presents and labeling them. I love those days, and although they are crazy, it is fun to listen to Christmas music and bond with a fun group of teenagers while they attempt to wrap items like pillow pets, playground balls, and hula hoops!

Way to go MTH Vikings, congrats to Sra. Gonzalez's 6th period class, and Merry Christmas Howard County!
